Recent Feedback from Etsy Customers

Customer feedback is very important and much appreciated by anyone who provides a product or service to the public. To the discerning online customer, however, it is even more relevant and useful to see what previous customers have said before making a decision. More specific feedback can tell you about the aspects that matter to you personally. It's not just about whether the item is as described, but the service, packaging, speedy dispatch and the personal touches.

I'd like to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to all those who have left me feedback publicly, especially those who got into the specifics. It lets me know I am providing the service you want so I can build on that to continuously improve.  Without your input I'd be working blindly.

But I thought I'd pick out my more recent favourites and say thank you to these wonderful people. You know who you are!

Currency Switch for Handmade by Amo'r on Etsy

ANNOUNCEMENT
The majority of customers to my Etsy shop, Handmade by Amo'r are in the USA, particularly my regular customers who show amazing loyalty. So I decided to experiment with switching the currency I operate in back to US dollars, as I did in the beginning.

LISTINGS ARE IN DOLLARS, BUT CONVERSIONS TO YOUR CURRENCY ARE ALSO VISIBLE
Non US residents can of course also see the price in the currency they have chosen for viewing Etsy Listings, eg. Euro, Pound, etc. In future, Etsy will be be making changes so you can only see the prices in your chosen currency. Please note, the conversions will not be rounded up or down to the nearest unit by Etsy so the prices may look a little strange in other currencies (eg this pendant or charm is $13 and converts to €10.27. )

I would love to hear your feedback or comments. Thank you!

Featured on Etsy Ireland Team Blog

Thank you to Molly of MollysVintageJewelry for inviting me to contribute to the series Eyes Open Ireland on the Etsy Ireland Team Blog and for posting my photos today. This is a series where team members send photos of their favourite, inspiring places and of scenes that fire their creativity. It's one of my favourite slots on the team blog.

Click on the photo above to hop over to the team blog and see the article and more of my photos. (This photo is of street art on a wall not too far from where I live in Dublin. No wonder I use a lot of Celtic spirals and swirls in my jewelry as I pass this several times a week.)

I noticed that Molly hasn't even mentioned herself or posted a link to her shop on the article, yet she is the volunteer who goes in search of team members to feature, communicates back and forth, sorts the final arrangement of photos, and sends to one of the editors, Lily of Petal to Petal or (newly volunteered) Karla of Nicobel who then post it up. Thanks to all 3 girls for your efforts.
Vintage Estate Yellow Enamel Daisy Clip On Earrings
So as a thank you, I'm showing off my favourite item from Molly's shop. I know very little about vintage jewelry, but these cool yellow daisy earrings look very 60s to me?? I love them!

Crafty Exchange of Seaglass

seaglass and pottery from the Irish shore
Recently I've had a unique opportunity to try out something different in seaglass.  This was thanks to a lucky encounter with Joy of Seaglass Lass in the USA.
Christmas Green Sea Glass Bracelet, Goldtone toggle
drilled seaglass bracelet by Seaglass Lass
A few months back I was approached by Joy who makes beautiful jewellery from drilled seaglass beads. Descending from Irish heritage, she was looking to buy some local seaglass for sentimental reasons. Joy was especially interested in pieces from the West coast of Ireland.
Seaglass Pendant Handmade in Ireland. Pale Aqua Seafoam Beach Glass. Still Waters
Wire wrapped seaglass pendant by Handmade by Amo'r
Our skills are very different. Joy drills and beads the seaglass whereas I wire wrap undrilled pieces to encage them. She would use the smaller pieces that are way to tiny for wrapping as the wire would swamp the glass instead of showing off its natural beauty. Those pieces are more suited to drilling into beads.
I managed to find several small pieces I'd collected on the West coast in Sligo this summer plus a few from local shores near Dublin.  I threw in a few larger ones just in case she wanted to make drilled pendants too.

Fixing a value on the pieces was a little difficult for me. After all, it was unlikely that I would be using them myself. So I asked Joy if she would exchange them for a few drilled pieces that I could experiment with. I have been toying with the idea of investing in a drill so I can make earrings and ornaments. Here was a great opportunity to see what I might do with it.
Seaglass Fairy Suncatcher, Christmas Ornament, Rear View Mirror Charm or Pendant

I sent off the Irish glass and in return, Joy sent me some sample seaglass beads she had drilled. This little fairy is the first item I have made using the glass that Joy sent. I have stacked 3 pieces of the seaglass onto a pin for her skirt. Her bodice is a combination of silver beads and her wings are silver plate. Her head is a stunning pink crystal that will catch the light and sparkle.

I may use the rest to make a pair of earrings for myself and perhaps one more fairy. Or maybe I will incorporate them into a long necklace.

However, I will hold off from buying a drill for the moment. Wire wrapping is my true art and I do not wish to detract from that. A drill to make beads from the smaller pieces would be useful of course, and I'll consider getting one at some point in 2013. I hope Joy has as much fun experimenting with the pieces I sent.

Oh Christmas Tree....

This year my Christmas ornaments will be gracing trees in various corners of the world including locally in Ireland, in the USA, Canada, Japan, Germany, Australia and the UK. This photo of one of the Connemara marble mini trees decorated in silver plate was taken in Finland where my Etsy friend Heli, is home with her folks for Christmas. Thanks Heli for sharing a glimpse at the gorgeous winter wonderland.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to ALL!

Easy To Fasten Jewelry

I'm a big fan of throw-on jewelry. I have oodles of patience and dexterity to wire wrap stones and seaglass or bead a long eyeglass chain. Oddly enough though, I can't stand messing about with finicky little clasps when it comes to blinging up.  And I'm not alone in that.

larger losbster clasp
handmade hook and eye clasp
In my case it's because I tend to fling on a necklace just before grabbing my coat. But my Mum has arthritic fingers, something I must bear in mind when making a piece for her. She prefers a larger lobster clasp or (my favourite,) a big hook and eye. Some of my customers have the same requirements and if the clasp is too dainty for them I will customise when possible.
rounder lobster clasp with extender chain

An extender chain tends to have broad appeal, even with a standard sized trigger or lobster clasp. Not only does it allow for adjustable sizing, but it can be easier to latch onto at first go than a tag as the links tend to be wider.
Recently, I began searching for something fresh and edgy to use for my seaglass pendants. I don't crochet - another thing I don't seem to have the fingers for, but maybe one day I'll come to grips with it....'scuse the pun. As an experiment, I commissioned some cotton crochet chains from the very talented Mo of Huggle Knits,  I've been using one of these chains myself now for a couple of months on my own personal seaglass and button pendants to see how it wears. I absolutely love it! Not only has it kept its shape and not gone all fluffy or dirty looking, but it has to be the easiest chain I've ever put on. And it's so light and comfortable, I forget I'm wearing it.

The crochet chain closes with a button. The hypoallergenic cotton is elastic enough to stretch the loop over it, without even looking in mirror. Just what you need as you rush out the door. Yet, the chain does not sag or stretch under the weight of my seaglass pendants. And if it does get make up or perfume on it, a quick wash with soapy water is all it requires.

When it comes to bracelets, an extender chain is always useful. Many find it much easier to latch the clasp onto it with one hand than onto a tag. However, Toggle clasps are generally easier again, once you get the hang of them, that is.
Asymmetrical, gemstone necklace, silver plate
Ease of use also comes into play in my necklace designs. Oftentimes, I will use a toggle clasp placed at the front or side instead of the back. This allows for a modern, asymmetrical style

Just as importantly, you can throw on the necklace without any help or a mirror.  Handy if you are on the run or up-styling your work outfit as you head off to the office night out.

Adjustable slip knots                   Pendant on adjustable chord
For a more casual look, an adjustable chord necklace can be really handy and easy to use, especially if you prefer to wear your necklaces long. Like any long necklace, just slip it over your head. Then if you want to wear it short, you just slide the knots away from each other. The soft suedette in the turquoise necklace above slides easily with just the right amount of traction.

You can make this type of adjustable, chord necklace yourself. To learn how, click HERE

Beautiful Things from Recycled, Found or Upcycled Objects

Much as I adore working with natural gemstones and in particular, Irish stones,  turning outdated, old or found objects into a thing of beauty can be really satisfying. Not only is it a very green and economically sound thing to do but it is also creatively fulfilling. You can do some very simple things with buttons, beach treasure, old broken jewelry etc.

From time to time I recycle old broken jewelry to make handbag charms, key chains etc. Most of the components of this brown mother of pearl and bead purse charm (sold) came from an old broken necklace.

Next time I'm making something like this I will post instructions.
butterfly button pendant

Stray buttons have lots of uses in jewellery and of course, for updating old outfits, handbags etc. I love to wire wrap them into pretty and affordable, button pendants.

plain black umbrella, personalised with a bright button

But one of the traditional and easiest ways to cheer up a tired-looking outfit is of course, to either embellish with colourful buttons or simply change the existing buttons to something more interesting

Last winter several of my work mates had similar black umbrellas and I kept picking up the wrong one. So I personalised mine by adding a pinky-purple button to the wrap-around tie.

While I was at it, I decided to drag out a simple black, zip up, wool coat that had seen better days and make it match my brolly.

As the original black buttons on the cuffs and neck were just a tad bigger, I decided to keep them and just stitch the purple ones on top. This 'frame' effect looks more finished and suits the heavy material better.  After a spot of dry-cleaning, this old coat has gleaned a whole new lease of life.

One of my favourite materials is seaglass, naturally tumbled and frosted by the sea and found on local beaches.

It's not always easy to wire wrap it so that it stays secure but remains beautiful, but getting it right can be so rewarding.

Seaglass makes beautiful jewelry but I also use it for bookmarks and other gifts

And this week I listed an ornament or sun catcher that I made by upcycling a cool piece of beach-worn glass I found on a Dublin strand.  The sea and silt have softened up the edges of the glass, but I don't feel it is frosted heavily enough to truly classify as 'seaglass.' Hence the term 'beach-worn.' However, it is an aesthetically appealing find. The bubble-effect glass almost looks liquid when hung on a lit up Christmas tree. So-called trash can really turn into treasure

New Arrival

 It's a Boy!
Baby Boy Angel ornament, pendant or charm
Ok, before I start a rumour, I should clarify that I am referring to the new arrival in my Etsy shop. I have finally listed a baby boy angel charm or ornament. This cute little fella would make a great gift to pop into a card for a new Mom, for example. Or maybe you want to put it on your Christmas tree, hang it on your rear view mirror as a good luck charm or wear it as a pendant.

So It's official, this pink, baby angel has a brother!

What's in a Name

Lately I have been making tweaks and improvements to my online store. The most important one was to change my Etsy shop name and therefor, my user name, from byAMOR to Handmade by Amor, in line with my shop front.

A year ago, I wrote an article for the Etsy Ireland team blog about the delicate operation of choosing a shop name and my rookie folly of choosing byAMOR as my user name. Read about it HERE.
The old URL will still work by redirecting to the new one

Since then, Etsy have made it possible to change your user name. I finally managed to streamline my user name to go with my branding and identity, Handmade by Amor . The new URL is http://www.etsy.com/shop/HandmadebyAmor but the old one will still redirect so no harm done there. I chose to do this as the term byAMOR just doesn't seem to stick in people's minds and according to my google stats, is never used to find me, where as Handmade by Amor is. I believe and hope I have made the right choice.

Etsy Treasury Time Again

It's that time again when I share recent Etsy treasuries either made by me or featuring one of my items. Feast your eyes and appreciate handcraft, OOAK, handmade, original artwork, unique gifts, once-off, one of a kind......need I say more?

 To Market To Market
Here's a treasury I made featuring only Crafty Ireland Team members when I should have been preparing for a craft market.

Can't Help Thinking In Black and White by La Creature and You
(a blend of Crafty Ireland Team and  A Printmaker's Revival Team)

And this sleek treasury in black and white was made by fellow team member, Raphaele of La Creature and You. It is a cross-team collection featuring 50% Crafty Ireland team and 50% A Print Makers Revival Team. A special thanks is due to Raphaele as she regularly makes cross-team treasuries to introduce the Irish squad to other, international teams on Etsy and faithfully posts them on the team blog. Thank you too Raphaele for including my black lava earrings, Dark Moon.

Thank you to all these lovely Etsy peeps around the globe who featured my work in their stunning treasuries this past week or so:

USA based, Lynn Corrigan, deserves a special thank you from me as she regularly features my items in her well-thought out treasuries.
